Jon Ossoff tours Atlanta mail facilities | Latest updates

11Alive has been tracking issues at the Atlanta facility for months.

ATLANTA — Editor’s Note: The video above is from an earlier article about Palmetto Mail installation issues.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is scheduled to tour the USPS Atlanta regional processing plant in Palmetto on Thursday.

For weeks, Ossoff has been pressing the USPS for answers about delays at its new regional processing facility south of Atlanta. The issues were first reported by 11Alive after viewers contacted our station to report undelivered mail, missing medications and lost packages.

The delays in Atlanta are due to Atlanta’s new regional processing and distribution center in Palmetto. It opened on February 24, bringing together fulfillment and distribution centers from the Atlanta, Augusta, Macon and Duluth areas, which are each being repurposed as local fulfillment centers. Atlanta, after Richmond, Virginia, was one of the first regional areas to experience major network changes.

Previously, Ossoff set a May 16 deadline for Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to respond with concrete answers on how the USPS planned to improve delivery rates.

On May 17, the day after the deadline, DeJoy sent a letter explaining how the USPS would address the “significant decline in performance,” which DeJoy called “unforeseen.” You can learn more about these plans here.

Following his tour on Thursday, Ossoff is expected to give a news conference after reporting his findings at 3:15 p.m. You can watch the full speech using the video player above.

Those experiencing delays or who have not received mail can contact the newsroom with their concerns as we continue to cover this story. Fill out our online form below, and a member of our press team will contact you.
