Braves place AJ Minter on 15-day injured list, recall Jimmy Herget

The Atlanta Braves announced Thursday that they have placed reliever AJ Minter on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation. The team recalled right-hander Jimmy Herget to take Minter’s place on the active roster.

Minter allowed a hit and a walk during a scoreless inning Wednesday against the Nationals. It was his first action since May 23 in Chicago. He has appeared in 25 games this season and has a 2.95 ERA and 4.86 FIP in 21 13 sleeves. Minter was effective, but walked a tightrope at times and struggled with an increase in home runs. After allowing six in 70 games last season, Minter has already allowed five home runs in 25 games this season. That leaves the Braves with two left-handed options in the bullpen, Aaron Bummer and Dylan Lee. Left-hander Ray Kerr is expected to start Thursday’s series finale against the Nationals.

Herget was optioned to Gwinnett on Wednesday to make room for Spencer Schwellenbach. He was eligible to return to the active roster to replace an injured player. Atlanta acquired Herget from the Angels on May 2. Herget appeared in two games during his previous stint on the roster and allowed two hits and a walk to go along with four strikeouts in three scoreless innings.

Additionally, the Braves announced that infielder Joey Wendle had elected free agency. He cleared waivers and was sent outright to Gwinnett on Wednesday.
