Atlanta United ends its losing streak and shows it can still challenge for a playoff spot

Atlanta United finally managed to end their nine-game winless streak in Major League Soccer (MLS). Last Wednesday (29), the Five Stripes returned to winning ways against Inter Miami, winning 3-1 at Chase Stadium, in a match where the score could have been even more unbalanced.

This triumph could be the turning point and the boost needed for Atlanta United to reposition themselves in the competition which is in its round of 17. The Five Stripes were tactically perfect. At the start, Atlanta United sought to break the Miami formation, third in the championship in possession. The team had several chances in the final third early in the match, notably with the return of Thiago Almada, who was the driving force behind the visitors scoring three points, giving the experienced Sergio Busquets a tough time . The Argentinian had an 80% success rate and was perfect with long balls.

Lionel Messi pulled off a slight comeback for Inter Miami with a fine goal from outside the box, but it was in vain. Luis Suárez was completely overshadowed by Stian Gregersen’s stellar performance. The defender won almost all his duels, both on the ground and in the air, and was crucial in the tackles, not letting any dribble pass him.

By defeating the Eastern Conference leader, the Five Stripes demonstrated their ability to reach greater heights and move closer to the playoff zone. With 16 points, they are just three points behind Nashville SC, the first team in the MLS playoff zone. There is still a long way to go, but this match could change mentalities and provide the necessary momentum through newfound confidence.
