New affordable housing at East Buffalo Public School 78

New affordable housing at East Buffalo Public School 78

The Olympic Avenue Apartments – 46 new affordable units at the former Public School 78 in East Buffalo – are now available, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.

All homes will be accessible to low-income households, with eight set aside for people with disabilities who will have access to on-site support services.

“This project exemplifies New York’s creativity in transforming underutilized properties into much-needed housing,” said Governor Hochul. “Our continued investments in East Buffalo improve affordability, strengthen our communities and increase housing opportunities for all.

The project includes energy-efficient upgrades such as a green roof, new electrical systems, fuel-efficient heating and cooling, an updated stormwater management system and new windows. The site also includes new sidewalks, lighting, a playground and a community garden. The development will also provide free internet connection.

“Affordable housing is a critical need in Erie County and the completion of the Olympic Avenue Apartments is great news, adding much-needed living space for low-income households and people with disabilities. The reuse of the former Public School 78 for this project transformed this disused building into modern, energy-efficient apartments with an improved streetscape that also adds to the quality of life of the neighborhood,” said Mark C. Poloncarz, Principal of Erie County.

The project started for the first time in 2022.
