First Alert Weather Day: More severe storms on Memorial Day

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – More severe storms are expected for Memorial Day.

• First weather warning day for severe Memorial Day storms
• Destructive winds and large hail possible
• Humidity is decreasing, the weather will be calmer again this week

The threat of severe weather from Sunday evening has passed, and overnight it will be partly cloudy. Lows will fall to 18 to 20 degrees, with calm winds. The threat of severe storms will return in the morning, so be prepared for a potentially active Memorial Day.

We have declared a First Alert Weather Day for Memorial Day as our severe weather concerns are not over yet. A complex of strong to severe storms coming out of the Tennessee River Valley will move across the mountains of western North Carolina around 4:00 – 5:00 am. These storms are expected to stick together well enough to reach the I-85 corridor closer to 7:00 – 8:00 am.

These storms have the potential to unleash another round of damaging winds and heavy hailstorms, posing a threat to the Memorial Day ceremonies taking place this morning. Pay close attention to the weather before heading out tomorrow. These storms are expected to move out shortly after noon, leaving some clearing in the afternoon and evening.

Depending on how quickly the sun comes out again and how much energy the morning storms use, some additional showers and thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon and evening on Monday as a cold front moves through. Highs will ultimately be between 27 and 30 degrees due to the cloudier start to the day.
