Braves recall reliever Jimmy Herget from Triple-A

After Darius Vines struggled mightily and was fired following last night’s disaster in Pittsburgh, the Braves recalled Jimmy Herget to take his place on the team.

The Braves acquired Herget from the Angels earlier this month. The 30-year-old journeyman right-hander had his ups and downs in 2019-21 with the Reds, Rangers and Angels, before a strong 2022 season gave him his first full campaign, and 1.6 fWAR to boot. However, he had massive walk and home run issues in 2023, leading to another up-and-down season. Despite being the Angels, he did not make their Opening Day roster and was pitching for their Triple-A team before his DFA and acquisition by the Braves.

Since his acquisition, Herget hasn’t exactly performed well for his new organization, with a 3.86 ERA, 4.32 FIP, and 4.85 xFIP in Gwinnett. He has relief depth, and the Braves haven’t really used their relievers much, so the only reason to expect him to factor into game results is the Braves’ predilection to hustle at just about anyone to protect their most prized backup weapons.
