Police continue investigation after second cocaine find

This week, new information emerged about the discovery of a second container of cocaine in a container in the port of Piraeus.

The second shipment, found on Thursday, included 100 kilograms of cocaine hidden among frozen squid.

The ship onto which the container was loaded had come from Peru and according to the shipping documents the destination was Croatia.

The drug prosecutor’s office is preparing charges against unknown persons in connection with the discovery.

Thursday’s discovery came a day after a large shipment of cocaine worth a total of 210 kilograms was hidden in a container of frozen shrimp that had arrived on a ship from Ecuador and was en route to Albania.

Following this seizure, two Greeks and two Albanians were arrested.

One of the Albanians is believed to be the leader of the gang and had an arrest warrant out for his involvement in another drug raid in 2017. He was accused of joining a gang that produced Captagon pills in a hidden laboratory in Nea Peramos in western Attica.

Although police were unable to link the two cases, the drugs were in the same packaging and both containers arrived in Piraeus on the same ship.

The police assume that the perpetrators placed the goods between the frozen food after gaining access via the containers’ cooling systems. This way they were able to avoid breaking the seals on the containers’ doors.
