Atlanta Named the #1 Place to Visit in Summer – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — Whether it’s strolling through Piedmont Park or watching whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium, there’s plenty to do in the Atlanta area.

According to a new study by WalletHubAtlanta is the #1 place to visit in the summer.

“About 82% of Americans plan to travel this summer, and 42% plan to take more than one trip,” it says. “Metro Atlanta is the best summer travel destination, in part because the cheapest flights from major cities require no connections and can cost as little as $278.”

Washington, DC, Orlando, Honolulu and Tampa round out the top five destinations on WalletHub’s list.

“Atlanta offers a wide variety of attractions. The city also ranks highly when it comes to the prevalence of amusement parks, shopping malls, ice cream parlors and swimming pools, so there are plenty of places to have fun and cool off,” WalletHub said.

The study comes as people prepare for the Memorial Day holiday. The holiday weekend is expected to set two Atlanta travel records starting Thursday.

AAA reports that car travel is expected to set a record with approximately 38 million people traveling by car.

If you’re traveling anywhere, the TSA advises you to arrive at the airport early.

“If you’re trying to get through TSA, just make sure you check your luggage and make sure you don’t have any large liquids, or large toothpaste. And be sure to listen, and we’ll be with you throughout the day,” said TSA Officer Briana Anderson.
