New images and timeline emerge for BeltLine entrance to Piedmont Park

After years of anticipation, design plans and a firm timeline are coming together to eliminate the you-know-what cluster where the BeltLine’s popular Eastside Trail meets Monroe Drive and Piedmont Park.

Work to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety at the intersection of 10th Street and Monroe Drive is expected to begin the evening of Sunday, June 9 with paving, according to Atlanta BeltLine Inc.

The busy intersection serves the BeltLine entrance into Piedmont Park and Midtown via the 10th Street bike lanes. Its user-friendly transformation is considered the third phase of construction of the Northeast Trail through Piedmont Park.

The changes will include a raised intersection, improved pedestrian crossing lights, improved bicycle access on the 10th Street bike lanes, and new traffic signals at Monroe Drive and near Kanuga Street.

The goal is to better align the BeltLine’s Eastside/Northeast Trail corridor on both sides of Monroe Drive, with a new bike path entrance on 10th Street.

According to BeltLine officials, an existing plaza where the BeltLine dead end at Monroe Drive will be moved to the center of the trail and bike entrances.

The BeltLine closure schedule provides detour routes for trail users and drivers to bypass construction on and near the roadway. The intersection is expected to be fully closed for just five days, from June 9 to the evening of June 14, while utility and asphalt work takes place and concrete ramps are installed.

Meanwhile, along the second phase of Segment 1, from Park Tavern to near the Piedmont Park dog parks, grading, wall installation and stormwater work continues, but installation trails have not yet started.

The first new section of the Northeast Trail in Piedmont Park opened last month.

All three sections of Segment 1 through Piedmont Park are expected to be completed late this fall, BeltLine now reports.

Construction at Monroe Drive is tentatively scheduled to end in September.
