Houston power outage: Nearly 30,000 CenterPoint Energy customers still in the dark a week after deadly storm passes through Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Thursday marks a week since a deadly windstorm ravaged southeast Texas, and thousands of Houston residents are still without power.

CenterPoint Energy said power has been restored to 890,000 customers since the May 16 storm. This represents 97% of customers affected by power outages.

Yet as of Thursday morning, more than 27,000 customers were in the dark, according to their Outage Tracker. CenterPoint previously said the deadline for most people to get their power back on was Wednesday evening.

The company calls the remaining outages “isolated cases in some locations where there is significant damage or customers cannot receive power.”

CenterPoint said it continues to have the workers and resources needed to resolve the remaining outages as quickly and safely as possible.

No timetable for the remainder of the repairs was provided.

CenterPoint’s interactive map of estimated restoration dates shows that most of the remaining outages are occurring in the Hunters Creek Village, Spring Branch, Inwood Forest, Trinity Gardens, Cypress and Waller areas.

Amid ongoing power outages, heat index values exceed 100 degrees. We may be under a heat advisory this weekend, especially Memorial Day, with a forecast high of 96 and a heat index of 111. If this heat index prediction holds true, this will be the hottest May heat index in Houston’s recorded history. .

At least eight people were killed when the storm passed through the Houston area last week. A man was crushed by a crane at an east Houston cement plant, while other deaths included trees falling on homes and a carbon monoxide incident.
