Walter O. Bircher (AKA Big Wally, Wally B, Pops, Old Sarge), beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Klein, Texas on May 1, 2024 . He was born on May 6. , 1931, in New Orleans, LA. His mother and the years of depression instilled in him a strong sense of dedication and perseverance.

Wally was the loving husband of his late wife, Barbara Loisel Bircher, whom he married on February 12, 1955. Together they began a new chapter in Houston, Texas, building a life filled with love, laughter and 60 years of life darling. memories. Wally was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara, his mother, Hortense Diaz Bircher; his brother, Ernest Bircher; his cousin Louis “Benny” Bircher and his granddaughter, Kelly Bircher.

Wally is survived by his children, Cary and his wife Bridget, Tim and his wife Pat, Paul and his wife Judy, Beth Bircher and Evan Bircher. He was the devoted grandfather of Kim Moon and her husband Brian, Noelie Bircher Hamm and her husband Christopher, and great-grandsons Thomas and Tim Moon.

Education was of great importance to Wally, he took engineering classes at LSU and in the Air Force to further his education. His commitment to learning and growth continued into his professional life, where he enjoyed a successful 30-year career as a Customer Engineer/Installation Planning Representative at IBM Corp. He then moved to work as a mechanical engineering consultant at BGA Corp, assisting in the computer room. layout and specifications for 5 years. He then returned to IBM as an external contractor.

Wally’s service to his country was highlighted by his time in the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and distinction as a staff sergeant in the Arctic region of Labrador, as well as a radar technician during the war from Korea. His dedication to duty and service continued long after his military career, as he found a strong calling in volunteering for various organizations and causes close to his heart.

A man of many talents and interests, Wally was a member of VFW Post 9761 of Crosby, Texas, and generously gave his time to organizations such as the Northwest YMCA, St. Rose of Lima Church and School, the Northwest Memorial Hospital, Houston ISD. , Klein ISD, gifts in kind, Champion Forest HOA, Fallen Soldiers Memorial/Wreaths Across America and Houston National Cemetery.

In his spare time, Wally found comfort in the outdoors, particularly through his love of hunting. He passed this passion on to several generations of his family and friends, creating lasting bonds and memories that will remain treasured forever. He was a huge fan of his beloved Astros and enjoyed going to games as well as listening to them or watching them on television.

Wally’s determination and unwavering spirit are a testament to his character, inspiring all who knew him to strive for their best and live a life filled with purpose, kindness and charity.

Wally touched the lives of many people with his generosity, warmth and love. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his legacy of service, commitment and compassion continue to inspire future generations.
