ATLANTA — Five months after a fire at a homeless encampment damaged a bridge on Cheshire Bridge Road and closed it, the road has reopened.

The Atlanta Department of Transportation confirmed Wednesday that the bridge and road between Faulkner Road and Wellbourne Drive are officially open and safe for traffic.

The fire broke out in late December around 1 a.m. in a homeless encampment under the bridge and took firefighters nearly an hour to put it out. The bridge crosses a railway line.

In early January, Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan said the bridge should not be demolished and could be repaired, but that it would take 10 weeks.

The repair schedule was delayed several times, finally being set for mid-May.

Last week, Atlanta DOT officials said Channel 2 Action News that they were looking at a May 27 project completion date. With the opening being Wednesday, crews were slightly ahead of schedule by the end of the project.
