How to get reimbursed for food lost during a power outage without insurance

If you’ve had to throw away food after power outages, you’re not alone.

We’ve told you how to recover up to $500 from your insurance company. But what happens if you don’t have insurance? That’s what a viewer asked KPRC 2’s Amy Davis.

“I am a 78 year old person. I just did my shopping on the 15th with my SNAP CARD. I had to throw everything out of the fridge. We had no power here in Katy. No electricity for 20 hours. I hope you can help us with information on how to get refunded. I don’t have insurance. Fia, a KPRC 2 viewer said.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps people buy the food they need to be healthy. SNAP food benefits are listed on a Lone Star card and can be used like a credit card at any store that accepts SNAP.

You can request reimbursement for lost benefits

Good news, you may be able to get reimbursed for the food you lost. Texas Health and Human Services said SNAP recipients have 10 days (from the day of loss) to apply for replacement benefits.

In the case of power outages, this would be May 27.

Participants can do this by calling 2-1-1. For additional questions, contact Texas Health and Human Services at [email protected].

If you have insurance you can request reimbursement for groceries you lost, you can probably get up to $500. You may also be able to get money back for restaurant meals and hotels during this time.
