8 former Atlanta Falcons still looking for a free agency landing spot

8 former Atlanta Falcons still looking for a free agency landing spot

The Atlanta Falcons did a great job early in the offseason bringing back key free agents as well as adding Darnell Mooney and Kirk Cousins. Of Atlanta’s remaining free agents, only one is a clear fit, with the rest being borderline players who will struggle to make a final roster.

It’s somewhat surprising that the Steelers didn’t add Woodside as an emergency quarterback. The number of players who followed Arthur Smith suggests that his inept coaching did not deter further relationships. Woodside should have no problem finding a role as an emergency option on a veteran team and that could be in Pittsburgh.

He’s the only remaining player the Falcons should bring back if the veteran wants to return for another season. Campbell isn’t going to fix your pass rush, but it’s a step in the right direction and makes a stacked defensive line unit even stronger.

Keith Smith played well enough to earn another contract if he played any other position in this league. Unfortunately for Smith, this is a dying position that the Falcons have already occupied. The veteran remaining free agent wouldn’t be shocking despite his long history in the league.

Two defensive pieces that are similar in the sense that they just aren’t talented enough to play a significant role on a team. Both players could still find a landing spot before the preseason, but it will be a tough road for either player to make the roster.

Two more players added by Atlanta in hopes of finding cheap depth and neither performed as expected. Shaffer has been the more disappointing of the two with the expectation that he could become a solid roster piece and also won’t make a roster barring injuries or a huge step forward in their progression.

Arthur Smith’s love of putting Franks on Atlanta’s rosters with more deserving pieces cut should continue to be investigated. The former quarterback and current tight end was injured for the 2023 season and spent the previous two years as a disappointment. If his footballing future is to continue, it will have to take place in a different league.
