OSU Baseball: Cowboys sweep Houston series, clinch second place in Big 12 championship

It was a record Saturday for the Cowboys, and it sends them into the playoffs on quite a run.

No. 17 Oklahoma State beat Houston in back-to-back games to close out the regular season on Saturday. The Cowboys went on a run in the opener, winning 20-3 thanks to a 10-run sixth inning, then completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory Saturday night to finish the year 36-16 and second in the Big . 12 with a 19-9.

Game 1: Cowboys 20, Cougars 3

This series, which was to take place from Thursday to Friday and Saturday, was delayed several times due to weather conditions. The first game actually began Friday night when the Cowboys and Cougars were eliminated in a scoreless first inning. The field may have been soggy, but the Pokes’ bat still caught fire Saturday.

Continuing from the first game, OSU scored six runs in the third, one in the fifth, then blew the game away with 10 runs in the sixth. The Pokes scored one in the seventh and two more in the ninth to reach 20.

Four Cowboys recorded three RBIs, as Nolan Schubert went 2-3 with a home run, Zach Ehrhard went 1-3, Avery Ortiz went 2-4 with a home run and Tyler Wulfert went 2-4. Ian Daughtery also went 1-3 with a one-run homer.

Sam Garcia improved to 6-3 with the win, striking out seven and walking four while allowing two runs in seven innings. Janzen Keisel closed out the game by striking out three Cougars and allowing one run in two innings.

Game 2: Cowboys 9, Cougars 2

The Cowboys’ sticks didn’t cool down during the intermission, scoring two runs each in the first and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. Houston scored one in the fourth, but OSU scored two each in the fifth and sixth and one more in the seventh. The Cougars scored one last run in the eighth.

Nolan Schubart continued his big Game 1 by going 3-4 with five RBIs and another deep ball. Ehrhard, Aidan Meola and Colin Brueggemann also each added RBIs.

Brian Holiday improved to 5-3 on the year, tying a season high with 14 Ks in 8 1/3 innings. He only walked one Cougar and allowed two runs.

Record performances

In the two games, Sam Garcia and Brian Holiday respectively became the 17th and 18th different pitchers in OSU history to reach the 100 strikeout mark in a season. The last time two Cowboys did this in the same year was in 2016 with Thomas Hatch and Trey Cobb.

The Cowboys also reached 100 home runs in a season for the second straight year in Game 1. They hit three bombs in the first game and another in the second game.
