Will Houston ISD have school on Monday? Responses from the HISD Superintendent

Miles said four of the district’s 274 schools suffered significant damage and about 90 were without power.

HOUSTON — Houston ISD schools were either damaged or without power. Classes were canceled Friday and Saturday, Superintendent Mike Miles provided an update on the status of schools and when students will return.

Miles held the news conference at Sinclair Elementary School in Heights, one of four campuses in the district that he said suffered significant damage during Thursday’s storms. He also gave the media a tour of the campus.

Miles said Pugh, Robinson and Paige elementary schools are the other schools with significant damage.

“There’s tree branches. There’s broken glass or broken windows, you know, in a lot of places,” Miles said. “But as far as significant damage goes, that’s it. So we feel lucky about that.”

Miles said the district will make a decision Sunday regarding school Monday, largely based on the electrical situation. He added that there were still about 90 schools that did not have them. The district sent out an update at 6 p.m., saying 77 schools were without power.

“It’s a challenge because we can’t send children to school without electricity,” he said.

He said his goal is to have schools ready by Monday if power comes back. He also said widespread power outages in residential areas could make it difficult for students and their families. The district could consider moving students from one school to another, but it is very likely that if a school does not have power, it will remain closed.

As for power, CenterPoint Energy told us its goal is to have power restored to the Houston area by Wednesday.
