Atlanta detectives investigate deadly shooting in Washington Park neighborhood

Homicide detectives are searching for at least one gunman who killed a man in Atlanta’s Washington Park neighborhood Wednesday night.

Officers were dispatched around 9:20 p.m. to a home along Westmoor Drive NW near Ollie Street NW. According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Doctors pronounced him dead on the spot.

FOX 5 saw investigators focus on a home in the 1000 block of Westmoore Drive NW.

Although the man’s name and age have not been released, neighbors say they are stunned by what happened and have offered their condolences to his family.

“He was a nice guy and didn’t bother anyone. He was a protector, he was someone who wanted to keep everyone together,” said neighbor Tenette Smith. “My heart is heavy.”

Smith said she moved to Atlanta to escape the violence in Chicago, only to be followed here.

“We have to do better,” she said.

Investigators spent the evening speaking to witnesses and gathering physical evidence. They have not released any information about what led to the shooting or possible suspects.

The APD Homicide Unit is investigating.
