Flash flooding likely with rare ‘high risk’ north of Houston

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon, primarily north of Houston at first, then spread southward late in the day and into the evening. The Weather Prediction Center issued a rare “high risk” for flash flooding north of Houston, including places like Huntsville, Livingston and Trinity.

A flood watch is in effect Thursday afternoon and night along and north of the I-10 corridor, including Houston and Harris County. Typically there will be a total of 2-4″ of rain, but some areas could receive 6″ or more as storms repeatedly rush over the same locations.

In addition to heavy rain, severe and damaging storms are possible. There is a risk of Level 3 out of 5 severe weather from north and west Houston. Level 3 means “many severe storms are possible,” according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Breaking it down by severe weather types, the risk of hail is locally lower, but high winds are more likely and there may even be a few tornadoes.

Scattered storms remain possible Friday, particularly south of Houston. By late Friday, all rain had disappeared and remained absent for several days.
