Houston under flood watch Thursday ahead of torrential rain

Heavy rain coupled with a slow-moving cold front has prompted the issuance of a flood warning across much of Southeast Texas.

Rain is expected to begin Thursday afternoon and could last all day Friday. Flooding on area rivers is possible, particularly north of Houston.

The following Texas counties are included in the flood watch Thursday afternoon through Friday morning: Houston, Trinity, Madison, Walker, San Jacinto, Polk, Burleson, Brazos, Washington, Grimes, Montgomery, Northern Liberty, Austin, Waller , Inland Harris. , Southern Liberty, Coastal Harris

A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding in Southeast Texas over the next 24 to 36 hours. Soil saturation in the region following several weeks of heavy rains has lowered the flood threshold. Residents under flood watches should closely monitor weather conditions through Thursday, especially if they experienced flooding last week.

If possible, take time Wednesday afternoon to clean gutters, drains and downspouts to ensure proper water flow around your home. Move valuable items to higher ground, such as upper floors or elevated areas. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider placing sandbags around doors and windows to keep water out.

Flooding conditions can develop quickly. Be sure to seek an alternate route if you encounter a flooded road. Remember, it’s best to exercise caution and stay safe until the threat of flooding has passed.

Thursday brings a risk of flooding rains to Southeast Texas.

Forecasts show storm risks increasing through the afternoon, with widespread showers likely to last through the evening. In Houston, 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected. In areas hit hard by flooding in recent weeks, particularly between Lakes Livingston and Houston, an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall Thursday through Friday morning. Higher rain totals of 6 inches or more are possible, especially north of I-10.
