Garnell Whitfield doesn’t need a calendar to remind him of May 14th.

“We live with this every day. So just because it’s 5/14 and there’s a lot of attention to it, a lot of people are here. Obviously it’s a special day, but we wake up every day and let’s relive 5/14,” he said.

Two years after a racist shooting killed 10 black people — including Whitfield’s mother, Ruth — and injured three others at the Tops Markets store on Jefferson Avenue, the supermarket unveiled an outdoor “honor space” dedicated to the victims on the corner from Jefferson Avenue and Landon Street.

Whitfield said the best way to memorialize her mother is to fight against the injustice and white supremacism that took her life.

“This community is in the shape it is in, not by chance, but by design. It has been intentionally segregated, it has been intentionally ostracized and resources have been disinvested, so we have to fight against all of those things,” he said. he declared. “We must fight for justice. We must fight for equity. We must fight for inclusion.”

Making progress is a “daily walk,” he said.
