Anita Baker’s canceled Mother’s Day concert angers Atlanta fans

Black people don’t play with their mothers. So imagine their surprise when hundreds of patrons gathered at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Saturday (May 11) to see Anita Baker for Mother’s Day, only for the show to be canceled just minutes before it started.

News anchor Marissa Mitchell shared footage of angry audience members leaving the venue that evening. State Farm Arena released a statement saying the show was canceled due to “late and unforeseen circumstances.”

Baker has not publicly acknowledged the affair. It’s unclear whether or not the show will be rescheduled, but Atlanta’s WBS-TV reported that refunds will be issued.

As reports of the cancellation began to circulate, attendees took to social media to call out the singer.

A woman on TikTok said: “I’m pissed! Anita, bald, canceled the concert. I’ve been waiting for him since January (…) We were all there, ready, waiting and his bald ass canceled the concert at the last minute. IRRITATED!! Angry, Anita. Give me my money.

In the caption of her post, she explained how excited she was to see Anita Baker. “It was my Mother’s Day present and how about she cancel the concert while we were waiting in line!” I spent $180 for the ticket and $55 for parking! This is trash,” the woman wrote.

Others took to Twitter — Baker’s preferred method of communication — to share their vitriol and other varied reactions.

One person tweeted: “Y’all…Anita Baker canceled her show minutes before it started and my aunt (who is at the arena for the show) texted the family chat group and said ” that’s why she always got cheated on, she’s an unreliable bitch. OMG sjsjsjffkkksaff.

Another reacted to the news by using a Luther Vandross meme as a way to reference the late singer’s issue with Baker. Elsewhere, a fan used a ‘reaction’ from Babyface, who was set to go on tour with the band. Rapture singer before their spinoff last year.

However, it wasn’t just a train of hatred that was running rampant. Some fans have extended clemency to Baker amid rumors that his health has deteriorated in recent years. “Many aging and disabled artists are forced to work in old age, not because they want to, but because they are forced to do so due to rising bills,” tweeted Ola Ojewumi, specialist in the lifestyles of people with disabilities.

Another fan chimed in: “I’m not sure what’s going on with Anita Baker and I hope she’s okay. Older stars going on tour (which seems exhausting) to make money is hard to watch. Frankie Beverly literally can’t sing anymore but is still on the road. A real indictment against the industry.

Baker concluded his Songstress Tour in late 2023 and a July 2024 show scheduled to take place in Toronto was marked canceled on Ticketmaster.
