Mothers in care in the Houston area receive a special surprise before Mother’s Day

HOUSTON (KIAH) – 300 Houston area mothers, in addition to Harris Health System and Santa Maria Hostel, received a special surprise Friday in honor of Mother’s Day.

This was all made possible by the Daisie Foundation (DF) as part of the organization’s Random Acts of Kindness initiative. To achieve this, the Daisie Foundation has partnered with Raising Canes, Benefit Cosmetics, Kroger, AbbVie, Shiraleah and Reliant Energy just in time for Mother’s Day.

CW39 Houston spoke with Daisie Foundation Board Chairman Julie Hightowerwho shared the importance of highlighting Houston area moms in healthcare on their special day.

“It is truly an honor to honor and celebrate the women who sacrifice the most. We came together and said we want to make today bright for these amazing healthcare moms who are still in the trenches. Even though we’re past COVID, there are still things going on behind the scenes that we don’t see, and we want them to know if no one else remembers you. The Daisie Foundation and our partners remember you.

Julie Hightower, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Daisie Foundation

The Daisie Foundation was established in honor of the late Daisie Robinson which had a heartbeat for mothers and children. Robinson was a single mother tasked with the challenge of overcoming the obstacles that came with being a divorced mother who worked to keep food on the table.

After overcoming these challenges, Robinson picked herself up and made it her goal to give back and make an impact on women and children in underrepresented socio-economically challenged areas.

“She actually had training as a nurse. “That’s why we honor health care stakeholders, but she also had a true heart and passion for individuals and communities that have been overlooked,” Hightower said.

The surprises were spread across three different locations, including Harris Health Gulfgate Health Center, Harris Health Strawberry Health Center and Santa Maria Hostel. This is the fourth year DF has given back to moms, and before Mother’s Day, they helped spread joy to more than 1,000 moms between Houston, Milwaukee and Chicago.

“The women who live at the women’s shelter are currently experiencing difficulties in life, but it is only for a moment. It’s just a short season and we know they’re going to bounce back. Our goal is to make them smile from the inside out,” Hightower said.
