Two people were killed in the shooting and four others were injured early Sunday morning.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum shed light Monday afternoon on a shooting at a Buckhead nightclub over the weekend that left two people dead and four others injured.

Chief Schierbaum told an Atlanta City Council committee that there was a shooter in the incident and that the shooter was targeting a person in the Elleven45 Lounge.

The chief said the person targeted was one of two people who died. Their identities had been revealed earlier: they were Mari Creighton, 21, and Nakyris M. Ridley, 20. Schierbaum did not specify which of these two people was the targeted person.

Schierbaum described the circumstances of the shooting.

“This shooter intended to injure another person inside, and in doing so, this weapon was discharged, and there were a number of people nearby who were also struck by these bullets,” said leader.

He added that the four injured were still recovering in local hospitals. Schierbaum also told the council that APD will soon be able to name a suspect.

“The investigation is very active. I was informed again this morning and I am confident that very soon we will be able to let this agency and Atlanta know who we believe committed this crime, who we believe has made this neighborhood feel less safe,” the chief said. “And we will bring them before a Fulton County court to hold them accountable.”

He added that he believed it would happen “very soon.”

“Our officers have worked tirelessly since this tragedy occurred to ensure that this individual is in custody, in court,” Schierbaum added.

One of the victims, Creighton, was a volleyball player at Albany State University, the school’s athletic program said on Facebook.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our student-athletes, Mariam Creighton,” the athletics program’s Facebook post said. “The Golden Ram sports community extends its deepest condolences to Mari’s family, friends and teammates during this incredibly difficult time.”

At this time, the identities of the other four injured victims have not yet been released, but police initially said they believed three men and three women to be the six total victims.

The salon is located on the corner of Peachtree Road and Bennett Street in Buckhead. Police said they believe the shooting stemmed from an argument and a “physical altercation” inside the club that escalated.

“At Elleven 45, we are deeply touched by the recent tragic events. Our thoughts are with everyone affected and we express our deepest condolences to the individuals and families who have suffered loss and injury. The safety and well-being of our customers. and staff have always been our major concern. To ensure a thorough investigation in cooperation with local law enforcement, we will be closing our doors today,” a club statement said on Sunday.
