Atlanta United acknowledges poor results, plans to improve

“First, you have to tell them the truth, right? » said Pineda. “You have to tell them the reality of where we are, why we are here, what’s going on? I think they’re pretty okay with that. Some of the conversations we’ve had are very good. They open up, they talk, they are aware of the situation and what is happening.

They are conscious.

“We’re going through a tough time right now,” guard Brooks Lennon said. “But we have to stay together as a team and as an organization and do everything we can to win some games.”

To that end, Pineda said he’s borrowing from what worked when he was in Seattle. He tried to simplify the expectations and tactics of each player. Pineda said that sometimes, instead of attempting a simple pass, a player dribbles. Instead of two players pressing, only one presses, which creates a disjunction.

Pineda said the decision-making process is somewhat understandable. When the team is not winning, players will try to do more than they should, rather than what they are supposed to do.

“They’re like, ‘oh yeah, I have to do more, I have to do more,’ and then doing more is actually less,” Pineda said. “So I try to simplify for them in that regard. But also the message and the direction, I think we need to start doing some of these simple things.

Lennon said the coaching staff does a good job through video, conversations, training and walk-throughs to make sure players know what they’re supposed to do.

Simplifying does not mean changing the style of a team based on possession and playing 4-2-3-1, Pineda said.

“I don’t believe in parking the bus and trying to counter,” Pineda said. “I think it gives you less chance of winning. We are a possession team, we have players who can play very well in possession. We have proven this time and time again. So it’s about getting back to who we are: we are Atlanta United. We have to play good football. We have to be good in possession. We have to create many chances. We must try to be a proactive team.

Injury updates. Central defender Stian Gregersen joined the team for training on Monday. Tuesday will be the last day he participates in the concussion protocol. He was injured during the first half of last week’s U.S. Open Cup victory over Charlotte Independence. He was scheduled to play 60 minutes against Charlotte because it was his first game since undergoing left knee surgery in late March.

Forward Jamal Thiare (hamstring) also trained with the team on Monday. Central defender Derrick Williams (calf) trained alone on Monday.
