Authorities say a Massachusetts teenager is dead after he was shot during a large house party in Northborough. Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said the 16-year-old victim was from Bellingham. He said the Bellingham Public Schools superintendent was notified that a teenager from that area was shot. Bellingham Public Schools Superintendent Peter Marano confirmed to NewsCenter 5 that the shooting victim was a Bellingham resident, but noted that the 16-year-old was not a student in the school district . “Our thoughts are with the family of the victim of this senseless incident,” Marano wrote in an email to NewsCenter 5. Marano also wrote that the school district was aware that other young Bellingham residents were present “We have been in close contact with “Our partners at the Northborough Police Department are confident that this was an isolated incident of violence and that there is no threat to anyone in Bellingham or the schools,” Marano wrote. “Out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence at the high school in the coming days. In addition, the high school will have counseling staff available to speak with anyone affected by this tragic incident.” Authorities said that shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, a partygoer flagged down a police officer and told him that someone was brandishing a weapon at 333 Howard St., the property where the party was taking place. This Northborough police officer asked state police and police departments in surrounding communities for help. Early said As officers prepared to enter the approximately two-acre property, they heard several gunshots. At that point, police entered the property and home, where Early said about 300 people were in what he described as a “chaotic scene.” “First responders from the Northborough Fire Department provided medical aid at the scene to the 16-year-old shooting victim. A Northborough police officer and a Massachusetts State Police trooper carried the teen to a waiting ambulance, Early said. The district attorney said the victim was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead. “Our thoughts are with the victim and his family during this senseless act of violence. Since it’s Mother’s Day, it’s especially difficult,” said Northborough Police Chief Brian Griffin. Early said a 17-year-old was shot in the buttocks during the house party. The shooting victim was taken to Marlborough Hospital for treatment of his injuries and has since been released. The district attorney said two other people were treated at Marlborough Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Early also said several people who had visible injuries were treated at the scene but did not seek further medical attention and refused to be taken to a hospital. Three adults were arrested on firearms charges in connection with the incident, Early said. The suspects, who are not Northborough residents, are scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Westborough District Court, according to the district attorney. The Howard Street property where the big party took place is listed on vacation rental websites and is described as a peaceful holiday home with seven bedrooms, a guest house, a pool and an extensive garden for entertaining. Griffin said the homeowner was on his property when the party was taking place, but it remains unclear whether the homeowner was the one who hosted the party or whether it was someone who rented the house for the night. The incident is being investigated by multiple Massachusetts State Police units and several local law enforcement agencies.
