A 17-year-old boy on a scooter was killed in a hit-and-run in Long Beach

Authorities say a driver who police say was under the influence of alcohol hit and killed a teenager on a scooter in Long Beach early Sunday morning.

Long Beach police were dispatched to the area of ​​Orange Avenue and South Street at 12:40 a.m. on reports of a collision with injuries


When they arrived at the scene, authorities said they found an injured 17-year-old boy who had been struck by an SUV while riding a self-driving scooter.

Life-saving measures were attempted on the boy, but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. His identity will not be released due to his age, Long Beach police said.

Investigation revealed that a woman driving a 2012 Cadillac SRX struck the boy as he was driving north on Orange. She then fled northbound and later crashed into a residence at 6100 Orange Avenue.

There were no injuries in the collision with the residential building.

The woman exited the vehicle on foot and fled the scene of the accident. A short time later she returned to the scene of the accident, where she was met by the police and arrested.

Police identified the woman as 35-year-old Karen Mativa of Compton. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run causing death or injury, aggravated manslaughter while intoxicated and assault with a deadly weapon.

Mativa is being held on $130,000 bail. Further details were not initially disclosed.
