Buffalo Bills’ offensive supporting cast gets no respect in latest CBS Sports rankings

For months now, the Buffalo Bills have had to endure the rumors that have been swirling about them and their offseason. With a lot of losses and not many big wins, expectations are down for the Bills. So much so that people are wondering if it will be the Miami Dolphins or the New York Jets who will win in 2024. Until one of them beats Buffalo, the AFC East belongs to the Bills, period.

The biggest “highlight” of Buffalo’s offseason was the departure of Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs. Their “number one” receiver is gone, which leaves the big question of who can emerge as Josh Allen’s go-to guy. It’s pretty simple, the Bills have the advantage of not having that number one receiver. While having one is important, Buffalo enters the 2024 season with a few different options as to who can be the number one target.

With a quarterback like Josh Allen, it’s obviously important to have a strong supporting cast. While the Bills may believe in themselves that they have the right weapons to flank Allen, most football fans don’t feel the same way.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin put together a list of the top ten QB situations in terms of supporting cast. Benjamin doesn’t seem to be a big fan of Buffalo’s supporting cast, placing them outside the top 10 in the wild card position.

“For all the questions the Bills have after their complete overhaul of Allen’s receiving corps, it’s not as barren a facility as one might think: Cook is an explosive dual threat in the backfield, and Kincaid has the upside of being a Pro Bowl wide receiver at tight end. Still, in today’s NFL, it’s hard to outplay the best of the best when you lack a true No. 1 on the outside.”

While James Cook and Dalton Kincaid have gotten their due, Benjamin downplays the Bills’ offensive potential. Khalil Shakir was arguably Buffalo’s No. 1 weapon once Joe Brady took over the offense. Curtis Samuel is finally getting an elite quarterback, and he had his best season in 2020 with Carolina when Brady was the offensive coordinator.

The offensive line will be essentially the same, even with Connor McGovern moving to center, the line remains the same, which was the best protection Allen has had in his career.

Leaving the Bills’ supporting cast out of the top 10 is disrespectful to what they were able to accomplish late last season to win the division. This offense is being overlooked and that’s what Bills fans should want heading into the season.
