3 Improvements Clint Capela Needs to Make to the Atlanta Hawks in 2024

The Atlanta Hawks missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season. It’s no coincidence that this was the first season Clint Capela came into the franchise and improved the defensive structure. Having a true defensive leader makes a huge difference for a franchise.

During the 2023-24 season, Capela struggled on defense, and the Hawks struggled as a result. It’s easy to blame players like Trae Young. But the point guard has never been known for his defense. He’s invested in that area, but the rest of the team has to carry the superstar, and that starts with Capela.

Unfortunately for the Hawks and the Swiss star, his physicality hasn’t been up to the challenge for most of the season. That’s led to trade rumors because without his defense, Capela simply isn’t worth the $22 million he’ll be getting next season.

While there is some question as to whether Onyeka Okongwu could replace Capela as the Hawks’ starting center, that would be a mistake. Okongwu is small in stature, standing at just 6’4″, which doesn’t bode well when the Hawks play against the NBA’s biggest teams.

Capela is 6’2” but he is able to use his size more effectively. He has a 7’1” wingspan compared to Okongwu’s 7’4” but since the NBA is a league of inches, that’s a significant difference. However, Capela still has a lot of work to do on his game, let’s look at three that he should focus on this offseason.
