Bills QB Josh Allen is the only player ranked among the NFL’s top 50 prospects heading into the 2024 season

Pro Football Focus took advantage of the final days of the NFL offseason to release the aptly named PFF50, an annual exercise in which the site ranks the league’s top 50 players based on a multitude of factors, including the site’s player grades. The Buffalo Bills have only one representative on this year’s list, and you probably won’t have a hard time guessing who it is.

Quarterback Josh Allen is the only Buffalo player to make PFF’s rankings, coming in at No. 12 among his peers. PFF NFL senior analyst Sam Monson praised the passer’s ability to overcome coaching adversity and noted that the 2023 campaign, by the publication’s standards, is actually Allen’s strongest as a professional.

“Buffalo’s offense wasn’t as good last season as it has been in the past, and the team made a coaching change because of it, but Josh Allen remains a unique player at the position, capable of crippling any defense with his arm or legs,” Monson wrote. “Allen actually posted the best overall PFF grade (92.1) and second-best adjusted completion percentage (77.1%) of his career in 2023.”

Most would probably agree that the 2023 season probably wasn’t Allen’s best as a professional, but that’s far from a flaw, as the quarterback has put together some stellar numbers throughout his career. His passing touchdowns were down and his interceptions were up last season, with his total rushing yards also dipping slightly. That said, he still recorded a league-high 44 total touchdowns, the fourth straight year in which he’s thrown for 40-plus total touchdowns.

A relatively weak year from Allen remains an MVP-caliber season.

Allen is the second-highest ranked quarterback on PFF’s 2024 list, with Kansas City Chiefs passer Patrick Mahomes taking the No. 1 overall pick. That’s a slight improvement for Allen, as he was ranked No. 3 overall on last year’s list behind Mahomes and Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow. The former Heisman Trophy winner fell to No. 17 overall this year; Allen was taken No. 12 overall in both versions.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from PFF’s rankings is that Allen is the only Buffalo player to make the list. Comparing other teams in the league with top-tier quarterbacks, the Mahomes-led Chiefs have five more players in the top 50, including two in the top 15. The Lamar Jackson-led Ravens have four more players in the top 50, while Burrow is joined by wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase in the top 25.

Based on PFF’s rankings, Allen has far less wiggle room than his peers on both offense and defense. If he can lead the team’s revamped roster—a unit that lost several key starters this offseason—to another AFC East title and a solid playoff run this season, his status among the league’s elite should no longer be in question.
