An Open Letter to Buffalo

An Open Letter to Buffalo

Editor’s Note: As you probably know, Kyle Okposo spent eight years with the Buffalo Sabres before being traded to the Florida Panthers in March. He won the Stanley Cup with Florida, helping the team defeat Edmonton in seven games to hoist the trophy for the first time in his 17-year NHL career. After some time off, however, the former captain wanted to thank the city of Buffalo and Sabres fans for their eight years of support. Here is his open letter:

What a journey we’ve been on together! After the trade in March, I took some time to reflect on my years in the Sabres organization. On my first flight to Florida, it all hit me and it was important that I capture what I was feeling. I wrote a few words at that time and recently returned to that note now that I’m back in Buffalo after the season ended.

This city and this team have meant a lot to me over the years, and it’s important for me to share some thoughts directly with you, Sabres fans.

All I wanted was to win for you. It didn’t happen, obviously. I’m sorry and I take it personally. I can tell you that I gave absolutely everything I had to the organization and the city. In return, the city welcomed my family and me with open arms.

I never thought I and my family would truly fit in anywhere else. I was wrong. You all care so much about the Sabres and the Bills. It’s amazing to be a part of something that people are so passionate about. It made the loss harder, but that’s okay. When this group that’s here turns it around, the feeling of accomplishment will be much deeper.

I can’t promise you anything other than that I’ve done my best to teach the men in this locker room. To care, to hurt, to love, to work hard. You’re in good hands with the young core, and they’ll give you their best.

To the Sabres organization: Thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of the group. I understand that I was not the flashy choice to wear the C. You did what you believed was right, and that is all I try to do every day. It was an honor and a privilege to wear this uniform for eight seasons.

Special thanks to the Pegula family for treating me like one of their own. Your generosity and commitment to the team is second to none.

Goodbye for now. Thanks for everything.
