Houston ISD Suffers Major Damage to Some Campuses, Will Not Be Ready for August 12 Start Date

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The 2024-25 school year is less than a month away for Houston ISD students. However, some campuses may need more time to prepare as Hurricane Beryl caused significant damage to some areas.

According to the district, Beryl impacted Texas’ largest school district, as 200 campuses lost power once the Category 1 hurricane made landfall.

At least 60 campuses reportedly suffered roof or structural damage, 50 had fallen trees and 20 campuses remained without power.

HISD said Sinclair Elementary School, Cage Elementary School, Project Chrysalis Middle School and Kelso Elementary School sustained significant damage in the storm.

Sinclair School was one of the most damaged by the unexpected derecho in May.

HISD said officials will contact parents whose students attend Sinclair weekly to update them on the status of their recovery and the first day of school.

District officials said crews are deployed around the clock to bring campuses back online for summer school students and begin preparations for the new school year that begins Aug. 12.
