Witnesses barricade themselves in their rooms after seeing two people shot in Midtown apartment

HOUSTON – Authorities are investigating a double shooting that occurred Thursday night at a Midtown apartment.

The incident happened just before 12:15 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 1600 block of W. Dallas Street, off Allen Pkwy. That’s where Houston Police Department Lt. Ronnie Willkens said he found two gunshot victims. One of them, an unidentified man, suffered serious injuries to his upper body, while a woman was shot in the leg. Both were rushed to the hospital.

As to what happened and how, it’s getting a bit complicated, as police are still trying to sort through the testimonies they’ve received from various witnesses.

According to Lt. Willkens, their first group of witnesses saw what they believed to be three to four men jump out the door of the apartment complex and enter a first-floor apartment, breaking the back window.

Inside the apartment were two other witnesses who told police they had barricaded themselves in one of the bedrooms. One of the shooters tried to break down the bedroom door, but they were able to stop him. The suspects fled shortly after. Lt. Willkens said the four victims did not even live in the apartment.

“The man that was shot is supposed to belong to a friend of his,” he said. “The people that were there don’t even live in that apartment. So investigators are coming in here to figure out exactly what’s going on, you know, who actually owns the apartment and everything we can about the suspects.”

Other witnesses at a dog park told police that after the first gunmen entered, other suspects (possibly a man and a woman) entered the apartment – so there could be 5-6 gunmen police are looking for.

No motive has been given for the shooting, and it is unclear whether the shooters fled by car or on foot. Police, however, continue to investigate the complex scene.
