LSU player Cam Caminiti selected by Atlanta Braves in 2024 MLB Draft

LSU baseball player Cam Caminiti was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 2024 MLB draft on Sunday night.

The star pitcher from Saguaro High School (Scottsdale, Ariz.) entered the draft as one of the top two high school pitching prospects in the country and was ranked among the top 15 players overall in this year’s MLB draft, according to MLB.com. Caminiti was the 24th overall pick.

A cousin of former National League MVP Ken Caminiti, the left-hander quickly followed Konnor Griffin, another LSU baseball player who was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the ninth overall pick, off the board in the draft. LSU coach Jay Johnson and his staff knew Caminiti would have to fall far enough in the MLB draft that he would consider coming to campus, and with the rookie going in the first round, it’s unlikely he’ll play for the Tigers.

Caminiti was upgraded from 2025 to 2024 and is one of the youngest players in the MLB draft at 17. But he doesn’t play like he’s that young as he carries and commands a 93-95 mph fastball, a pitch that has hit 98 mph before.

According to MLB Network, many MLB scouts believe Caminiti can master a full arsenal of four pitches, as he has shown good spin rates on his curveball as well as a slider. This season, while helping Saguaro win its first state championship in 13 seasons, he worked on a changeup that has proven effective enough to become a go-to pitch for him.

Caminiti has played some center field and is hitting the ball well, with a .493 batting average.
