It’s time for Summer League Basketball: Spurs vs Hawks

Welcome to the game thread. Veterans of the game thread know how we do things here, but for all you newbies out there, we have a few rules. Community Rules apply and basically say: be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

The Spurs won their first game in Las Vegas last night, taking a huge lead in the first half and holding on for a six-point victory as the shooting and defense slowed down a bit in the second half and the Trail Blazers caught fire from three-point range. It was a typical Summer League game, full of exciting plays punctuated by comically terrible basketball.

Stephon Castle had a solid debut in Las Vegas. His shot was a bit inconsistent, but his handling and distribution skills looked excellent against Summer League competition. Sidy Cissoko also had a solid game in his second year in Sin City, putting down some spectacular dunks and playing well on defense, especially in the first half when the Spurs looked set to run away with the game. Nathan Mensah had his best game of Summer League, scoring 12 goals and making impressive defensive stops on the much bigger Donovan Clingan.

At the California Classic, Coach Trevino decided to rest Cissoko and Castle on a dual matchup, and with Castle’s heavy fall last night, they might consider doing the same thing tonight against the Hawks. I wouldn’t be surprised if Castle is released from summer league before the end of the Las Vegas Summer League, but the Spurs will likely keep him at least until Tuesday night’s game against the Pelicans so he can run more and work on his game-day shooting.

Game Prediction:

The game tonight will be the reverse of what happened last night, as Spurs trail in the first half and dominate their opponents in the second half.

One last word :

Go Spurs GOOOOO!!
