91 Buffalo Bills Players in 91 Days: LS Reid Ferguson

91 Buffalo Bills Players in 91 Days: LS Reid Ferguson

It may be a cliché, but in the NFL, the only constant is change. The Buffalo Bills are no exception, and we fans see it in the constant turnover of the team’s roster. Thanks to the salary cap and the pressures of performance, not to mention the realities of competing in a highly competitive sport, teams are likely to add, subtract, trade, sign, release and trade players in perpetuity.

These are some of the many reasons why players seem less likely to stick with one club for their entire careers than they once did. The free-agent market gives players the freedom to test their worth on an open market, and the billions of dollars in revenue give clubs the ability to poach players from other teams each offseason.

This is a very long way to introduce a familiar face in our “91 Players in 91 Days” series. He’s the longest-tenured member of the roster and is actually the only player on the current team whose stint with the Bills predates head coach Sean McDermott, so he’s the perfect player to represent the middle of this series.

Reid Ferguson

  • Number: 69
  • Position: LS

  • Age: 30 (31 on 03/24/2025)
  • Experience/Draft: 8; signed with Buffalo after the 2016 NFL Draft
  • College: Louisiana State University

Financial situation (according to Spotrac): Ferguson is in the final year of a two-year contract he signed before last season. For the 2024 season, he will have a salary cap hit of $1,212,500 if retained. Buffalo will be responsible for the remainder of his signing bonus — just $2,500 — if he is released.

2023 Recap: Ferguson was again Buffalo’s long snapper for every game, a position he has held since the start of the 2017 NFL season. He had three special teams tackles for the club last season, bringing his career total to 12 tackles.

Positional perspectives: Ferguson is the only long snapper in town.

Off-season 2024: Ferguson is healthy and participating in offseason activities. He also loves to grill. His brother, Miami Dolphins long snapper Blake Ferguson, got married earlier this summer. While Blake gave all his groomsmen football jerseys, all the guests received Dolphins jerseys except Reid. His was a Bills jersey, proving that his commitment to the organization extends even to his own brother’s nuptials.

Outlook for the 2024 season: Ferguson will be Buffalo’s long snapper this year. If the team needs to add someone to its roster, especially a player it wants to place on injured reserve without ending that player’s season prematurely, it’s possible Ferguson could be released on Final Cut day and re-signed a few hours later.

The team has done this before (most recently last summer), so it’s possible they’ll do it again if need be. However, it’s clear that Ferguson has not only done a good job on the field, but he’s also been an asset to the locker room and community throughout his time in Buffalo. He’ll be with the team in September.
