Georgia lawmakers introduce water infrastructure bill in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Three Georgia lawmakers have introduced a bill to help modernize Atlanta’s aging water infrastructure.

U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock introduced the City of Atlanta Water Infrastructure Enhancement Act. Rep. Nikema Williams introduced a companion bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Lawmakers said the new legislation would do several things, including expanding the authority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct water infrastructure projects in the city. Those could include drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure projects.

At the end of May, Two water main breaks, one in downtown Atlanta and one in midtown Atlanta, shut down much of Atlanta for days.

Since the holidays, the city has added more sensors and jobs to prevent future incidents.
