The fry – although it is undoubtedly a fry – may not actually be French.

According to the National Geographic website, “Some claim that French fries originated in Belgium, where villagers along the Meuse River traditionally ate fried fish. In winter, when the river froze, the fish-starved villagers would turn to frying potatoes. The dish is said to have been discovered by American soldiers in Belgium during World War I, and since the dominant language in southern Belgium is French, they dubbed these tasty potatoes ‘French’ fries.”

Local favorite Whataburger also enters the fray with its signature crinkle cut fries. These fries offer a unique texture that sets them apart. It also makes a strong showing with its thick fries that are perfect for dipping in their signature ketchup.

For those who prefer a more gourmet experience, Shake Shack’s crinkle-cut fries are a must-try. Their crispy exterior and soft interior make them a popular choice among foodies. Another notable mention: Arby’s curly fries, which add a fun twist with their spiral shape and seasoned coating.
