New tropical disturbance detected off Georgia coast: NHC

GEORGIA — Days after Hurricane Beryl, now a weakening post-tropical cyclone near the Indiana-Ohio border, slammed into parts of the Caribbean, Mexico and Texas, forecasters are monitoring a new tropical disturbance, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A broad line of low pressure that has emerged in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of northern Florida and Georgia is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, the NHC said.

The system has a low chance of developing, only 10 percent over the next seven days.

“Environmental conditions appear only marginally favorable for further development of this system over the next few days before it moves inland to the southeast.
“We will be able to reach the United States by this weekend,” the NHC said.

ABC Action News meteorologist Denis Phillips said there is no reason to be concerned.

“It’s not tropical. It will eventually be absorbed by a front,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “There’s nothing to worry about. In fact, the Carolinas are in a major drought, which could be very helpful for some.”

Fox 13 Meteorologist Paul Dellegatto wrote in a Facebook post: “General high pressure, dry air and Saharan dust will cover much of the tropics this week with no developments expected.”

In Georgia, sunshine is expected through Friday, with showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 93 degrees Fahrenheit in Atlanta for the rest of the week. In Columbus, temperatures could reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
