Italian Saint’s Daughter Visits Western New York

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The daughter of an Italian saint is set to visit Western New York this weekend.

Dr. Gianna Emanuela Molla, daughter of St. Gianna Beretta Molla, will be in town Thursday through Sunday. She will make numerous visits to local churches during her stay. A Mass in her honor will be celebrated at St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla was an Italian pediatrician. Pregnant with Dr. Molla, her fourth child, in 1962, she refused an abortion, a total hysterectomy or the removal of the fibroid, aware of the fatal consequences.

Saint Gianna died on April 28, 1962 at the age of 39, one week after Dr. Molla was born. She was canonized in 2004. She is the patron saint of mothers, doctors, and the unborn.
