Jose Altuve Breaks Craig Biggio’s Impressive Record with Houston Astros

The Houston Astros will send three players to Arlington, Texas for the 2024 All-Star Game. Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker will represent the team.

All of these honors are well-deserved, and there’s good reason to believe the Astros have the best line in baseball. Alvarez, arguably the best hitter in baseball when healthy, earned his third straight All-Star nomination.

The power hitter is hitting .298/.382/.545 with an OPS+ of 162. He has 19 home runs, 21 doubles and 50 RBIs.

Tucker, who some might consider the best all-around player of the three, is hitting .266/.395/.584 with an OPS+ of 176. He has an impressive 19 home runs, 11 doubles and 40 RBIs in just 214 at-bats while dealing with an injury.

And then there’s Altuve, who should be inducted into the Hall of Fame someday.

It will be interesting to see what voters decide to do with the Houston star given the cheating scandal, but it would be crazy to leave out of Cooperstown arguably the best second baseman in MLB history.

At 34, Altuve continues to play at a high level. He appeared in his ninth All-Star Game and started for the fifth time. The 5-foot-6 star is hitting .309/.359/.464 with 13 homers, 18 doubles and 41 RBIs.

According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Altuve’s fifth start puts him in the elite bracket.

“This will be Jose Altuve’s fifth All-Star start, tying him with Craig Biggio for the most starts in Astros franchise history. The only players with more All-Star starts at second base are Ryne Sandberg (nine), Roberto Alomar (nine), Rod Carew (eight), Nellie Fox (seven), Joe Morgan (seven), Charlie Gehringer (six) and Billy Herman (six).”

Any time a player can be placed on the same list as some of the greatest players of all time, it indicates the type of player he is. While all are great in their own way, one could argue that Altuve is the best of them all.

Biggio, one of the Astros’ all-time greats, was named to seven All-Star games and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

A win should only help Altuve and Houston gain even more respect for the team they were, despite everything that happened. Now in a position to win the division after struggling to start the year, the Astros look like they could play again in October.

It will be the focal point after the All-Star Game following Altuve’s historic feat.
