shock and elimination in the Open Cup

In the deciding clash of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the humble Indy Eleven made history by beating the mighty Atlanta United to reach the semi-finals of the tournament for the first time. It was a night of glory for the Boys in Blue, who showed that the impossible can happen in football.

The Indy Eleven’s victory was no accident. Coached by former Minnesota United FC assistant and interim coach Sean McAuley, the Boys in Blue came prepared and with a well-defined strategy. Augustine Williams opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, and an own goal from Dax McCarty extended the lead. Atlanta United, meanwhile, looked lost on the pitch, unable to respond effectively.

The Indianapolis team, which has continued to grow since its inception in 2013, showed that it is ready to take on bigger challenges. The victory over an MLS opponent in the Open Cup is a milestone for the club and a sign that it is ready to take on whoever crosses its path. And that’s not all: the victory also puts Indy Eleven in the semifinals of the competition, a feat only one other team from the state of Indiana had ever accomplished before, the Indianapolis Inferno in 1992.

But it wasn’t an easy win. The first half was marked by numerous fouls and a truncated pace, but the Indy Eleven were able to capitalize on the opportunities created by Atlanta United’s fouls. The home team’s fouls led to dangerous set pieces that gave Indy the opportunity to control the pace and put pressure on the opposing defense.

The second goal, a Williams cross that was deflected off an opposing defender, sealed Atlanta United’s fate. Despite a late goal from Nick Firmino, the MLS team failed to turn the game around and were eliminated from the competition.

Josh O’Brien and Sebastian Guenzatti led Indy offensively, while Benjamin Ofeimu and Hunter Sulte held down the defense. Coach Sean McAuley was full of praise for his team after the win, noting the players’ confidence and positive attitude. According to McAuley, “We came out with a really strong attitude to go to the goal and defend with everything we had.”

The Indy Eleven will now face the winner of the semi-final between FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City. It will be a new challenge, this time away from home, but the Boys in Blue have already proven they have the grit and ability to overcome any obstacle.

“I remember a lot of our players throwing themselves at the ball, the keeper coming in and crossing at critical moments to calm things down, and a lot of players running hard to hold on to what we had and we’re in the semi-final,” McAuley added.

For Atlanta United, the elimination is a big blow. The club, already winners of the Open Cup in 2019, is going through a transition phase with numerous transfers and an interim coach. Currently out of the MLS playoff zone, the team must find a way to find its rhythm and become competitive again.

The loss to Indy Eleven exposed several weaknesses for Atlanta United, who failed to assert themselves at any point in the game. The roster changes and lack of familiarity were evident, and the elimination from the Open Cup only adds to the pressure on the team and its coaching staff.

For Indy Eleven fans, the win is a dream come true. Seeing the team advance to the Open Cup semifinals, leaving behind an MLS giant, is proof that hard work and dedication can lead to success. History has been made and the Boys in Blue remain determined in their quest for the title.

Meanwhile, the world of football continues to turn and the surprises never stop. Indy Eleven has shown that in football, determination and the will to win can overcome any opponent, no matter how big or powerful.
