Atlanta Public Schools Holds Final Meeting Before Vote on Superintendent Nominee

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Atlanta Public Schools held its final meeting with its superintendent finalist before electing him Friday night at Booker T. Washington High School.

“Not only did people come, but they came with enthusiasm, energy and excitement,” said Aretta Baldon, the school board representative for District 2.

The meeting was packed despite being held the day after a public holiday.

“The board is focused on doing good work, the community is engaged on a very deep level, and so I’m excited about the possibility of what we could do for these kids,” said superintendent finalist Dr. Bryan Johnson.

Parents and teachers were able to ask Dr. Johnson about his vision for the district.

“We will have a 100-day plan where we will really have an opportunity to share what we are looking at, what we are listening to and what we are learning and gathering,” Dr. Johnson said.

They were also able to discuss the areas they believe need to be worked on in the district.

“There’s a big push to prepare students for college. Not all students want to go to college. And also to retain students,” said Dara Tekalu, a parent of an APS student and a teacher in the district.

“Special education is probably at the heart of every conversation. The desire for engagement is there,” Dr. Johnson said.

The school board is scheduled to vote on Dr. Johnson’s contract on Monday, July 8 at 10 a.m.
