Fall Weather for Mother’s Day, Then and Now

Fall Weather for Mother’s Day, Then and Now

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Two weeks into May in Western New York can deliver all kinds of weather.

Specifically, I’m talking about Mother’s Day, and in the past, the Buffalo Airport has recorded everything from 80 degree temperatures to freezing temperatures to rain, sunshine, and even snow!

Looking back over the last 44 years, going back to 1980 gives a better understanding of what that day is generally like.

I would also like to note that Mother’s Day changes every year and can vary from May 8th to May 14th.

The average high temperature is 66 degrees and the average low temperature is 47 degrees. Some of the other records include the most snow that fell was 0.5″ in 1977 and the most rain was 1.94″ in 1990. Click here for the almanac page.

By looking further into the numbers, you can also know the probability of precipitation. For example, there is precipitation on Mother’s Day 52% of the time, and 23 of the 44 years have had measurable precipitation, including some traces of snow. However, snow doesn’t happen very often, 11% of the time a trace of snow falls on Mother’s Day and that’s almost every 10 years! 1983 and 1984 came and went, then again in 1996, followed by another close couple in 2010 and 2013. The trend suggests we should get another trace of snow on Mother’s Day, but the forecast, at least , have no effect. a chance for 2024.

Looking at the highs, it’s not surprising that the majority of the time is spent in the 60s, about 40% of the time. It still hurts a little to see the 40s ahead of the 80s in the statistics category!

As for 2024, Buffalo is headed for slightly below average with highs near 60 and an early shower.
