The news site Axios reports, citing a US and an Israeli official, that the US is preparing to hand over part of a delayed bomb shipment to Israel.

The US is expected to soon release about 1,700 500-pound bombs from the shipment, which has been on hold since May over fears that Palestinian civilians could be harmed if the Israeli military used such explosives in its attack on the city of Rafah, Axios reports.

The shipment will be released when Israel’s operation in Rafah ends in about two weeks, the news site reported.

U.S. and Israeli officials also said the Biden administration is still reviewing the delivery of 1,800 2,000-pound bombs.

The issue of the delayed delivery was discussed this week during a visit by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to Washington, an unnamed US official told Reuters.

The solution was to “separate the 500-pound bombs from the rest of the shipment, which includes the 2,000-pound bombs that are still being held back,” Axios reports.
