Skanska to Deconstruct Glass Roof at MARTA Five Points Station in Atlanta

Skanska was awarded a contract with the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to undertake the deconstruction of the canopy of the MARTA Five Points station in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

Valued at $49 million, this contract will be reflected in the company’s second quarter (Q2) results for 2024.

The scope of work includes the removal of the current pre-stressed concrete canopy and demolition of the plaza area to accommodate a new mass timber canopy.

The canopy will be designed with an open concept layout and renovated pedestrian entrances.

Scheduled to begin next month, the deconstruction process is expected to be completed by 2026.

Additionally, Skanska, in partnership with Vacse, is developing a courthouse in Växjö, Sweden.

The overall investment, including a construction contract valued at Skr 350 million ($33.29 million), is expected to total approximately Skr 430 million.

It will be built by Skanska Sweden, and construction is expected to begin immediately after obtaining the necessary building permits.

The courthouse will span five floors and cover a total gross floor area in excess of 10,500 m².

It will serve as the seat of the district court, the administrative court and the land and environment court.

The building aims to obtain Energy Class A and Exceptional Environmental Assessment Method certification from the Building Research establishment.

This project has been included in the company’s order intake for the second quarter of 2024.

Skanska is selling the courthouse, where the Swedish judicial administration has obtained the rental, for around 490 million Swedish crowns.

The transfer of ownership and payment will be aligned with the completion of the building, expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

These developments come after Skanska this month received a contract for the initial phase of construction of the Lokomotion technology center in Tampere, Finland.
