Atlanta Announces $2 Million Bid to Take Sundance Film Festival Out of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — More and more cities are investing big money to lure the Sundance Film Festival out of Utah.

The festival announced earlier in 2024 that it would open proposals to other cities to host the event.

Atlanta, Georgia, is the latest city to detail some of its proposals, setting aside a $2 million budget for its efforts.

Boulder, Colorado, is among a list of other cities that have come up with their own proposals, adding a $1.5 million incentive to bring the festival to Boulder.

Atlanta would represent a big change in climate for the event since the festival takes place in January, and Atlanta has a significantly milder winter than Utah.

Some believe that with the world’s busiest airport and a recent increase in film and television production, Atlanta could have a leg up on the competition.

The film festival’s contract with Park City will expire in 2026.

An announcement regarding the future of the festival is expected in late 2024 or early 2025.

It attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year to Utah.

The state of Utah and Park City have submitted proposals for the festival to remain in the state.
