Man arrested for shooting at Houston police officers | Texas

Houston, TX – Charges have been filed against a suspect who fired his weapon at Houston police officers at 1006 Kress Street early Tuesday morning.

Juan Alberto Gallegos, a 40-year-old resident, is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant in the 339th State District Court. A booking photo of Gallegos is attached to the press release.

HPD Officers J. Luna, D. Zhu and Probationary Police Officer B. Martel, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured during the incident. Officers Luna, Zhu, and Martel are assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and were sworn in as officers in August 2021, March 2019, and June 2024, respectively.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives C. Walker and H. Le reported that patrol officers responded to a domestic dispute with a weapons call at the residence after a caller reported that the suspect, her boyfriend’s father, was drunk and had threatened to harm her, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s juvenile sister with a handgun. Officers arrived and evacuated the caller and her family members safely, without the suspect’s knowledge.

Gallegos repeatedly came out of the front door to speak to police, but refused to open the iron gate. About an hour later, he opened the front door, pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officers outside. Gallegos fired at least once at the officers, who returned fire. He then retreated inside the residence. No one was injured during the exchange and the officers took cover while waiting for HPD SWAT officers to arrive.

About an hour later, Gallegos was arrested by SWAT officers without further incident. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and Gallegos was subsequently charged for his role in the incident.

As is typical in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents within the city limits of Houston, this matter is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the internal affairs division.
