Houston airports see second busiest travel day in early summer

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Houston airports had a busy day on June 6, with many people passing through. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 83,796 passengers passed through checkpoints at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) that day.

Why this big rush? Well, it turns out that nearly 190,000 children in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) finished school the day before, starting their summer vacation. Families wasted no time in hopping on planes for vacations and having fun, which explains the increase in travel.

The TSA counts the number of people who go through security at airports. Even though June 6 wasn’t the busiest day ever (it was March 8, with 84,295 passengers), it shows how busy the travel season can be during school holidays and holidays.

Houston airports serve approximately 19 million travelers between Memorial Day (May 27) and Labor Day (September 9). Bush Airport expects more than 14.6 million travelers and Hobby Airport more than 4.3 million, mostly on domestic flights.

To make sure your trip goes smoothly with all those people traveling, here are three simple tips from Houston airports:

  1. Reserve your parking in advance: Don’t worry about parking; reserve your space online at least 12 hours before your arrival at fly2houston.com/parking.
  2. Get the Houston Airports App: Stay informed and find your way by downloading the free Houston Airports app. It tells you the length of security lines so you can plan ahead.
  3. Speed up security with TSA Pre-Check: Avoid long lines by signing up for TSA Pre-Check. You can apply online and if your application is approved, you can keep your shoes and belt on through security, which makes things much faster.

With Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays being the busiest travel days this summer, Houston airports are working to ensure your vacation gets off to a stress-free start.
