Harris Health begins construction on .6 billion hospital in northeast Houston

Harris Health System has begun construction on a new $1.6 billion hospital, which will become the next Level I trauma center, in northeast Houston, USA.

Scheduled to open in late 2028, the new 12-story hospital will replace the aging Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Hospital.

This is a key part of Harris Health’s $2.9 billion investment plan.

This plan includes adding a new Level I trauma hospital, renovating the existing LBJ facility, increasing the capacity of Ben Taub Hospital and building three new health centers in the north -west, southwest and east Harris County.

Esmaeil Porsa, president and CEO of Harris Health System, said, “LBJ and Ben Taub were built more than 30 years ago, and during that time our community has grown exponentially.

“The addition of a Level I trauma center will be the first of its kind in Harris County outside of the Texas Medical Center and is critical to meeting the growing needs of our region, as is the expansion of our primary care with new clinics.”

Covering an area of approximately 1.3 million feet2the new hospital will include 390 private rooms and offers the possibility of adding 60 more.

It will also feature a rooftop helipad and 15 operating rooms, including an advanced hybrid operating room.

Harris Health System said the partnership with UTHealth Houston is important because the new hospital will provide an expanded clinical training site for McGovern Medical School residents and faculty.

Harris Health System Board Chair Andrea Caracostis said, “This is the beginning of a monumental improvement in our medical infrastructure to provide state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional health care to all county residents by Harris.

“The expansion of this hospital is long overdue and will go a long way to better meeting the needs of our staff, patients and Harris County residents.
