Seven years after the concept’s initial unveiling, the former industrial warehouses of The Works continue to see new life on what’s known as Atlanta’s “Upper Westside.”

The latest addition to the Underwood Hills adaptive reuse development is Google Fiber, which celebrated an expanded footprint in Georgia with the opening of its The Works offices last month. The move comes ahead of Google Fiber’s expected growth around metro Atlanta this year, after years of downsizing, rushed deadlines and other delays.

Located in the back of the warehouse district off Chattahoochee Avenue near content studio Bread N Butter and brewery Dr. Scofflaw’s at The Works, the new offices at 500 Chattahoochee Row house what’s called GFiber’s metro Atlanta team, according to project officials. The space totals 9,560 square feet.

GFiber, which launched its Internet service in Atlanta in 2015, is expected to expand its high-speed Internet service to more local neighborhoods, using fiber-optic cable connected to homes and businesses. GFiber now operates in approximately 20 U.S. metros, and locally, service extends from Alpharetta and Duluth to Lithonia, Stone Mountain, East Point and Smyrna, among other municipalities.

According to owner and developer Selig Enterprises, the multi-phase, 80-acre The Works project will include a total of 500,000 square feet of office space.

The veteran Atlanta real estate firm spent eight decades assembling the 40 former warehouse structures that now make up the project, as well as new developments such as the Westbound at the Works housing complex.

Beyond Google, more recent additions to the neighborhood include Damsel, a cabaret restaurant and cocktail bar, entertainment concept Your 3rd Spot and the newest location in town of Fetch dog park and bar.
